Georgi's necklace

Over the holidays a good friend commissioned me to make a necklace for his girl.  He asked for something similar to the the Elsa Peretti open heart, but with my own twist, and maybe a turquoise.  Above is the concept he chose for her.  We decided to change the square wire, shown in the sketch to round, giving the necklace a more feminine look.

I gathered my materials: 12 Gauge sliver wire, 3mm turquoise stone, 18" of sliver chain.

Soldering up the heart

Here I've made the bezel setting for the turquoise, and am fitting the setting into the heart.

everybody's all soldered together.. time to set the stone!

The final product.

Making holiday cards

Cutting the stencil...

Applying the gold leaf...

brushing off the excess...  (It's really delicate - if you touch it, it sticks to your fingers)

Tada!

Beautiful Tourmaline,

Precious Opals (fossilized clams!) from south Australia.

Did you know the Opal was once considered unlucky??  Sharp blows, or sudden changes in temperature may cause opals to crack or fracture.  This fragility may explain the belief, dating back to the 19th century.

Soldering all the tiny little parts together, @ jack+g

I'm coloring the top rectangle that the stone sits in with black sharpie marker.  When I put the stone in place it rubs away the marker, and I can see which parts need to be filed down.
